History of Poll Braunvieh Herd Sire Pursuit to Polled

"In 1975 Koijak Braunvieh started with Swiss bred Fullblood bulls used over Angus polled cows. Using the successive crosses of 1/2, 3/4, 7/8 then 15/16th ( 93.75 %) is classified as Purebred. In the early 1970's many European breeds were introduced to Australia by that accepted means of grading. Most were supplemented by imports of live fullblood cattle or embryos along the way.

Only Purebred or Fullblood bulls were eligible for registration with Australian Braunvieh Association Inc.

No lesser grade bulls were registerable.

At Koijak we selected Polled Purebred Braunvieh bulls that met our structure inspection and were from cows with adequate growth, sound feet and legs AND sound in UDDER structure. By not using bulls from unsound cows we have arrived at some reliability in maternal traits.

So at this stage the semen stocks comprise 18 Fullblood bulls from Switzerland, Canada and USA.

There are 25 Polled Purebred Koijak Braunvieh bulls and one US Polled sire in the tank.

Comments: With this bull I tried some line breeding with K Leon poll on top and bottom of pedigree. This doubled up on what I worked out was the dam which had Homozygous Polled. Koijak Doona poll. Even now I have K Napolleon ps, K Leon p, K Leonid p, K Curly p, K Dr Pepper ps, K Kelso p, K Carlos p, with direct line back. Then side lines with connections to K Napolleon p/ K leon p being K Ewan et p, K Codebreaker p, and K Blackstone also carrying K Napolleon. All these bulls are still in the tank as well, although Napolleon has only 2 doses left. Sire of Napolleon is K Frederick et horn, and his sire is Frowin (swiss fullblood) which is still in tank too. Much to do yet.
